Upgrade 6.1.6 RPM to 9.x YUM Repo

Going from 6.1.6 installed from RPM to 9.x from YUM repository. I’m sure some things will break, and that’s okay, I’ll figure that out. Just looking to understand, what all needs to migrate so that I can move us to the newest version without losing everything we’ve built. Has anyone done this before?

  • What Grafana version and what operating system are you using?
    v6.1.6 (commit: cf9cb45)
    Rocky Linux 8.5

  • What are you trying to achieve?
I’d like to update to a newer/latest version of Grafana without losing dashboards and playlists.

  • How are you trying to achieve it?
I tried adding the YUM repo and installing the Enterprise version.

  • What happened?
Installed successfully, started successfully but when logged in it still appears to be running 6.1.6

  • What did you expect to happen?
Actually, I expected to get some kind of error about config files not matching, or something indicating that the new version couldn’t grab port 3000 or something like that. But it would have been really awesome if it just worked.

  • Can you copy/paste the configuration(s) that you are having problems with?
    Irrelevant.

  • Did you receive any errors in the Grafana UI or in related logs? If so, please tell us exactly what they were.
    Nothing interesting.

  • Did you follow any online instructions? If so, what is the URL?
Just the standard installation instructions from grafana.com

Hi @sivan,

Thanks for opening this post.

Short answer => Yes, the update is possible as there is no specific roadmap for e.g. to update to v7 or 8 before going to version 9.

Long answer => There are definitely a ton of changes occurring between ver. 6. x till 9. x and YES many things will break or might not be available as they used to be before.

But, many improvements had been made as well. However, it is not possible to name each and everything but you can read the release notes:

Since there are not all the release notes on the website for ver 6. x but are available as checked on GitHub while comparing seems to have more than 5000+ commits so if you want to see them view this link.

For the next part of your question i.e. to upgrade from v.6 to v.9, will suggest to follow this community post as users provided very helpful tips as how they upgraded their server in different environments and how to backup the data.

I hope this helps
